A carer is a person who takes care of a family member or other loved one who would not be able to manage at home alone. The person needing care may be a child with special needs, a disabled or seriously ill adult, or an elderly person. 
 
A person who has entered into an agreement with the municipality to take care of his/her relatives is called a contractual carer.
